Penn Engineering, class of 1997
The Daily Pennsylvanian reported that Ternus graduated in 1997 from the School of Engineering and Applied Science with mechanical engineering and applied mechanics, plus a psychology minor. 9to5Mac has given attendance years as 1993–1997.
He was a member of Penn's men's swimming team. PhillyVoice, citing Penn athletics records, described him as an all-time letter winner and noted dual-meet wins in 1994 in the 50-meter freestyle and 200-meter individual medley. Those are sports-record claims, not Apple claims.
Senior project
The New York Times and the Daily Pennsylvanian both describe a senior project: a mechanical feeding arm that people with quadriplegia could operate with head movements. Penn's paper named collaborators and called the device the Head Actuated Nutritional Device Feeder (H.A.N.D. Feeder).
This site reports the project because it is independently documented by the university paper and a national newspaper. It does not claim the prototype is in a museum or that it "led to" any Apple product.
Return as speaker
The Daily Pennsylvanian reported that Ternus delivered the undergraduate commencement address for Penn Engineering in 2024. That is a useful E-E-A-T detail: the school still presents him as an alumnus in public, years before the CEO title.
