Education

Ternus received a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Pennsylvania in 1997. That credential is in Apple's official biography.

The Daily Pennsylvanian, Penn's student newspaper, reported that he graduated from the School of Engineering and Applied Science with mechanical engineering and applied mechanics, and a minor in psychology. The same outlet, and The New York Times, describe him as a varsity swimmer. For his senior project, he worked on a mechanical feeding arm that people with quadriplegia could control using head movements — a detail the Times and Penn's paper both published.

Those student-year details matter because they match the later career: physical devices, tight tolerances, and products that have to work in a person's hand or on a person's head. They are not a claim that a feeding-arm prototype "explains" the iPhone. They are the earliest documented engineering work in his public record.

Early career: Virtual Research Systems

Apple's biography states that before Apple, Ternus "worked as a mechanical engineer at Virtual Research Systems." News organizations including the Associated Press, citing his LinkedIn profile, describe about four years in that role after Penn, designing headsets and related hardware during an earlier wave of virtual-reality equipment.

Virtual Research Systems was a small firm, not a consumer brand. The job is still the only pre-Apple employer that Apple itself names. This site does not treat later Vision Pro work as a straight sequel to that 1990s hardware — only as a documented rhyme: head-mounted displays appeared twice in his career, decades apart.

Apple, 2001–2013

Apple says Ternus joined the product design team in 2001. That is about 25 years at the company before the CEO title. Profiles in The New York Times, TechCrunch, and 9to5Mac identify his first product work as the Apple Cinema Display.

The Times, quoting former colleague Michael D. Hillman, reported that by 2005 Ternus was leading hardware engineering for iMacs during the G5 era, and that he spent substantial time with manufacturing partners. Those are second-hand professional recollections, not Apple press-release claims. They are included here because they are attributed and specific.

In 2013, Apple says he became a vice president of Hardware Engineering. Reporting consistently places that promotion under Dan Riccio, then head of hardware. From that point, public accounts credit him with expanding responsibility across Mac, iPad, and AirPods hardware — product lines Apple later named in his CEO announcement.

Hardware chief, 2021–2026

In 2021 Ternus joined Apple's executive team as senior vice president of Hardware Engineering. Apple's April 2026 announcement summarizes the span of that job: he "was instrumental in the introduction of multiple new product lines, including iPad and AirPods, as well as many generations of products across iPhone, Mac, and Apple Watch."

Apple also credits him with:

Becoming CEO

On April 20, 2026, Apple announced that Tim Cook would become executive chairman and that Ternus would become CEO on September 1, 2026. The board approved the plan unanimously, Apple said. Arthur Levinson, non-executive chairman for 15 years, would become lead independent director. Ternus would join the board on the same date.

Cook's quoted characterization of Ternus, from the newsroom release:

"John Ternus has the mind of an engineer, the soul of an innovator, and the heart to lead with integrity and with honor."

Ternus's own statement in the same release said he had been "lucky to have worked under Steve Jobs and to have had Tim Cook as my mentor."
