Tim Cook and John Ternus: the leadership transition
Apple announced on April 20, 2026 that Tim Cook would become executive chairman and John Ternus would become CEO on September 1, 2026. The overlap was intentional. Cook is still at Apple.

Apple did not announce a retirement party. It announced a role split:

Why the overlap matters
Cook remained CEO through summer 2026 "as he works closely with Ternus on a smooth transition." That sentence is Apple's. It means the succession was not a Friday-night surprise.
Reported The Times and others had already described Ternus as a leading internal candidate in January 2026. BBC noted that another long-time executive, COO Jeff Williams, had left, which concentrated speculation. Those are context, not the legal act. The Times and WIRED reported that Johny Srouji was named chief hardware officer, taking a broader hardware umbrella as Ternus became CEO. Bloomberg, citing unnamed sources, has mentioned deputies in the hardware organization. Unnamed-source org charts are reported, not confirmed, unless Apple posts them.
Comparison without mythology
Cook came from operations and supply chain. Ternus comes from hardware engineering. Jobs was a founder-product figure. Those are category differences, not moral rankings. Apple has now had three very different CEOs in the 21st century. Continuity is the internal culture and the product file; discontinuity is the professional training of the person at the top.
