Apple
John Ternus and AirPods
AirPods are one of two product lines Apple explicitly ties to John Ternus with the word instrumental. The April 2026 announcement also cites noise cancellation and over-the-counter hearing-aid capability.
Why AirPods are on this site
Unlike many products, AirPods are named twice in Apple's CEO materials: as a new line Ternus helped introduce, and as a mature product whose recent features (noise cancellation, hearing health / OTC hearing-aid capability) Apple places under his hardware leadership.
That double mention is the reason this page exists. It is not because wireless earbuds need a personality.
Timeline, modestly
AirPods launched in 2016. Ternus had been a hardware VP since 2013. The Verge's succession article says he oversaw development of the original AirPods from that hardware seat. Apple does not publish a program-manager org chart from 2014–2016, so this site stops at: VP-level hardware leadership overlapping the product's creation, later SVP-level credit for the category's engineering.
Hearing health
Apple's April 2026 language is unusually clinical: AirPods as an "all-in-one hearing health system that can serve as over-the-counter hearing aids." That is Apple's claim about a product capability. It is not medical advice, and this site is not a hearing clinic.
Quotes from interviews
Secondary features quote Ternus, in a CNBC interview, naming AirPods among products that "fundamentally changed how people use earphones." If you use that line, attribute it to the interview, not to this page as if we heard it in the room. See interviews.
AirPods as a business, not a gadget anecdote
Cook-era Apple often describes wearables as a Fortune-scale business. AirPods are the in-ear half of that story; Watch is the wrist half. Ternus's public credit is hardware engineering, including later hearing-health features. That credit is consistent with a mechanical engineer running the group that must make billions of small devices reliable.
Camera-equipped AirPods and similar items in August 2026 Bloomberg reporting are not treated as shipped products here. They belong on the future page as unconfirmed.
